Wednesday Afternoon Movies...

Join us in the Library's Fielding Room on the 3rd Floor for free movies and free popcorn:

Breach  4/30, 1:30 p.m. PG-13, 111 minutes.

FBI agent Robert Hanssen spent over 20 years selling government secrets to the Russians, making him the most egregious traitor in U.S. history. He was an Opus Dei Catholic and a devout churchgoer who was also a sexual deviant, a straitlaced company man so trusted by his employers that they once appointed him to lead an investigation designed to reveal who the spy was--when in fact it was Hanssen himself. And in the end, he was brought down in part by 26-year-old Eric O'Neill, an agent-in-training who worked with him for just two months.

Becoming Jane 5/14, 1:30 p.m. PG, 120 minutes.

Julian Jarrold expands on events from Jane Austen's life that may have shaped her fiction. In 1795, 20-year-old Jane  is an aspiring author. Her parents married for love, and money is tight. They hope to see their youngest daughter make a more lucrative match, and there's a besotted local, Mr. Wisley, who would be happy to oblige. Unfortunately, Jane isn't interested. Then, she meets brash law student Tom, while he's staying with relatives in rural Hampshire. As in many Austen novels, it isn't love at first sight--but rather irritation. Just as affection begins to bloom, Tom has to return to London, and Wisley, whose financial prospects are superior, proposes.

Pride and Prejudice 5/28, 1:30 p.m. PG, 129 minutes.

When Elizabeth Bennett meets the handsome Mr. Darcy, she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force.

Elizabeth: the Golden Age 6/11, 1:30 p.m. PG-13, 115 minutes.
By 1585, Elizabeth I is an experienced ruler about to face two of her biggest challenges: betrayal by her Catholic cousin, Mary Stuart, and invasion by the Spanish Armada. It isn't so much that the Protestant Elizabeth wishes to rid England of "papists," but that she wants her country to remain free from foreign domination. Closer to her home, she enjoys a sisterly relationship with lady-in-waiting Bess. That changes when Sir Walter Raleigh hits the scene. In order to continue exploring the New World, he seeks the queen’s sponsorship. She is charmed, but Raleigh only has eyes for Bess.

The Kite Runner 6/25, 1:30 p.m.  PG-13, 127 minutes.
Amir is a young Afghani from a well-to-do Kabul family; his best friend Hassan is the son of a family servant. Together the two boys form a bond of friendship that breaks tragically on one fateful day when Amir fails to save his friend from brutal neighborhood bullies. Amir and Hassan become separated and as first the Soviets and then the Taliban seize control of Afghanistan Amir and his father escape to the United States to pursue a new life. Years later Amir now an accomplished author living in San Francisco is called back to Kabul to right the wrongs he and his father committed years ago.

Dan in Real Life 7/09, 1:30 p.m. PG-13, 98 minutes.
Dan Burns is a newspaper columnist who writes about family issues and relationships. As a widower with three growing girls to raise, however, the difference between Dan’s printed wisdom and his struggles with fatherhood and loneliness is often vast. He’s put to a severe test when he packs up the kids for a cabin holiday with his parents and siblings, then falls for the exotic, if elusive, Marie during a solo excursion to a bookstore. Stirred by a woman for the first time since his late wife, Dan is shocked to find that Marie is actually dating his brother Mitch, and that she’ll be spending the vacation with him in the midst of his family.

Why did I get Married? 7/23, 1:30 p.m. PG-13, 118 minutes.
Janet Jackson stars as a therapist for her group of friends, all couples with different problems in their marriages.  Every year, the four couples take a vacation together, partly to help keep their marriages together.  This year, however, one of the husbands shows up with a svelte young woman on his arm, not his wife!  When it turns out that this woman is best friends with the wife and they are carrying on an affair right under her nose, all hell breaks loose.

Teen Movie Night Mondays at 6 PM...

Beowulf 5/05, 6:00 p.m. PG-13, 114 minutes.

When a Danish kingdom is threatened by the monster Grendel, Beowulf--lured by the promise of heroic glory--comes to rescue them. He succeeds, but falls prey to the seductive power of Grendel's mother.  Loosely based on the old epic, but fleshed out with lushly animated battle scenes and new plot twists.

Across the Universe 5/19, 6:00 p.m. PG-13, 133 minutes.

Set in America during the Vietnam War, Across the Universe is a powerful love story set against a backdrop of political and social unrest: it's a story of soul-searching, self-doubt, and individual powerlessness cleverly conveyed through a multitude of Beatles songs. Like young adults all across America during the 1960's, Jude, Lucy, Max, Sadie, Prudence, and JoJo are in turmoil over the war; questioning their individual roles in the war effort and struggling to find a way to hold true to their beliefs while making a difference in the world. While love proves a powerful uniting force, its limitations become clear as relationships are strained and broken over individual perceptions of responsibility to cause and country.

National Treasure 2 – Book of Secrets 6/02, 6:00 p.m. PG, 124 minutes.

When a rival offers alleged proof that Benjamin Gates’ ancestor, Thomas Gates, was not a Civil War-era hero but a participant in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Ben and his father and crew hopscotch through Paris, London, Washington DC, and South Dakota to gather evidence refuting the claim.

The Golden Compass 6/16, 6:00 p.m. PG-13, 113 minutes.

Lyra, an orphan who's lived most of her life among the scholars at Oxford, is intrigued when her uncle, Lord Asriel, announces his plans to travel north to investigate the source of some mysterious particles called Dust. Lyra has little hope of following her uncle until a mysterious woman named Mrs. Coulter asks Lyra to travel north as her personal assistant. All is not as it seems, however, and the disappearance of Lyra's friend Roger sets her on a dizzying adventure. She does have an alethiometer, or golden compass, that can help her see the truth, and a number of companions, including a shape-shifting daemon, a polar-bear warrior Iorek Byrnison, Texas aeronaut Lee Scoresby, and witch queen Serafina Pekkala.

Enchanted 6/30, 6:00 p.m. PG, 107 minutes.

Enchanted
begins in the animated fairytale world of Andalasia where Princess Giselle is destined to marry Prince Edward and live happily ever after. Problem is, Edward's step-mother Queen Narissa doesn't want to give up the throne and will do anything to get Giselle out of Edward's life. Queen Narissa's solution is to push Giselle into a well that magically lands Giselle smack in the middle of the real world--the center of Time Square in New York City, to be exact. This launches the live-action portion of the film where Giselle immediately realizes that things are frighteningly different in this new world and that she is ill-prepared for the callous ways of the people who inhabit it. Giselle finds herself alone on a stormy night in the wrong end of town, but a chance encounter with Robert and his princess-loving daughter Morgan leads to a warm, safe place to spend the night and the beginnings of a complicated, yet compelling relationship.

I am Legend 7/14, 6:00 p.m. PG-13, 100 minutes.

Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered... and quickly running out of time.

Bee Movie 7/28, 6:00p.m.  PG, 90 minutes.

Having just graduated from college, a bee by the name of Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) finds himself disillusioned with the prospect of having only one career choice—honey. As he ventures outside of the hive for the first time, he breaks one of the cardinal rules of the bee world and talks to a human, a New York City florist named Vanessa (Renee Zellweger). He is shocked to discover that the humans have been stealing and eating the bee’s honey for centuries. He ultimately realizes that his true calling in life is to set the world right by suing the human race. That is until the ensuing chaos upsets the very balance of nature. It is up to Barry to prove that even a little bee can spell big changes in the world.

The ESL program at this library continues to be very successful. Look at this track record! In 2007, we held four Entry-Level ESL classes. Despite students' work-schedule conflicts, 41 out of 101 graduated and received certificates. At the beginning of the first quarter of 2008, the library started another Entry-Level ESL class and the first Conversational English class. Second Floor Book Displays...

“Where are Chicken Soup books?”

“Where can I find the CLEP review books for algebra, U.S. history and psychology?”

“Where are the books written by African American authors?”

“Where can I find Traditional Jewish books by publishers such as Art Scroll and Feldheim?”

If you’ve previously walked up and down the aisles of the 2nd floor searching for the above books, you will now find these books with much greater ease. Housed in attractive new display cases, these very popular subject areas have been consolidated by category. Many additional copies of old favorites, and multiple copies of new titles in the above categories have been purchased, so no one should leave empty-handed. This is just one of the many ways Finkelstein Library continues to meet the changing needs of our patrons.
