Pulitzer Prize Winner attracts
Pulitzer Prize winner, Debby Applegate captivated a large crowd with stories about the life and times of the controversial Henry Ward Beecher, nineteenth-century preacher, abolitionist, social reformer, and celebrity on April 2 at the library. Ms. Applegate is the author of The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher, winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. Ms. Applegate also signed copies of her book after her talk. This event was co-sponsored by the Rockland Civil War Round Table. For further information about the Round Table and its many activities, visit the link above. Debby Applegate had spent 20 years researching and writing about Henry Ward Beecher. She first discovered Beecher as an undergraduate in the college archives at Amherst College, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1989. She continued her work on Beecher while a Sterling Fellow in American Studies at Yale, where she earned her Ph.D. in 1998. Her research for the book spanned the American Revolution to the Gilded Age, and took her to scores of historical archives and scholarly libraries across the country. Ms. Applegate's writing has won her numerous prizes and fellowships and has appeared in publications from the Journal of American History to The New York Times. |
