29th INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Welcome to Finkelstein Memorial Library's International Film Festival. Now in its twenty-ninth year, this series is dedicated to the presentation of significant international cinema. Discussions following the films are designed to foster an appreciation of film as art and as insight into other cultures. Films shown April 15 & 22, May 6 &13 have English subtitles.

Films will be shown on Tuesdays at 7 PM in the theater at the Cultural Arts Center at SUNY Rockland Community College, 145 College Rd., Suffern. Dr. Ann Fey will lead discussions following the films. The suggested donation is: $3 for adults; $1 for seniors and students.

THE ITALIAN [APRIL 15 at 7 PM];

For six-year-old Vanya finding his birth mother means more to him than being adopted by a wealthy Italian couple.  The film, an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival, addresses the issue of illegal adoptions in Russia with intelligence and poignancy. 

 

OFFSIDE [APRIL 22 at 7 PM];

"Offside" is about a group of Iranian girls who attempt to enter Tehran's Azadi Stadium dressed as boys in order to watch a big football match but some get caught and arrested. After the establishment of the Islamic Republic in Iran, women are not allowed to enter the stadiums. Official Selection: New York Film Festival.

A man coping with the institutionalization of his wife because of Alzheimer's disease faces an epiphany when she transfers her affections to another man, Aubrey, a wheel chair-bound mute who also is a patient at the nursing home.
